Cosplay Chess

This Haruhicon, Sherlock and Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot) will face off in a battle of minds – a game of chess, that has the potential to reveal the culprit for a murder!

Your hosts Tabby & Mariam (Sparkie&Ceres) host this game of completely normal chess. Ignore the 32+ cosplayers standing on the human sized chess board – definitely a normal game of chess. Whether participating on the board, or there as an attendee in the audience – this is a show you don’t want to miss!

Cosplay chess is a scripted game of chess between the hosts, where cosplayers mirror the moves on a human-sized chess board. Any time a piece is taken – a battle ensues! Check out some of the previous games run by Tabby & Mariam here:

If you’re a cosplayer – sign up below to get in on the chaos! You’ll be assigned to either the black or white team, and told what ‘battles’ you’ll need to prepare (unless you opt out of battle scenes). How you defeat your opponent – dance off, tea party, actual fisticuffs? – is up to you!

  • No experience necessary

  • Apply as a solo piece or with friend(s)

  • Make sure you have a Discord account as this is our primary mode of contact after the application period!

  • Unless you opt out, all pieces will be given a minimum of 2 battle scenes.
    • Though the outcome is scripted, battles themselves can take many forms - work out what feels fun and comfortable with your opponent!

    • Anything elaborate, or anything involving non-standard tech – tag the hosts in the discord server so they can confirm it’s possible

    • Confetti and bubbles are strictly prohibited. When planning your act please keep in mind others will use the space after you so don't drop anything that can't be easily picked up.

    • If you want to try out being on the board but are not confident with battles – that’s totally fine! Please let us know in your application.

  • Applications will remain open for a month and you will be notified of the outcome at the end of the application period.
    • More information about application priority and system can be found within the form below.

  • Don’t be disheartened if you don’t get the piece or script size you wanted – the game involves a lot of moving parts, and the hosts have a lot to balance when assigning roles. Please only apply if you’re happy to be involved in any role (excluding accessibility and other requests made during application).

  • You'll be added to a discord server specifically for chess where you'll be notified of the order of your battles and get to see the script.

  • The script is super top secret so make sure it stays in the server!

If you need to change your character/costume choice after you have been assigned to the board you must let the Hosts know ASAP. Your team assignment and script role will be connected to your character choice. The hosts will work with you to the best of their ability to make a new character work, but please respect the work that goes into this (it’s a huge piece of live theatre) by giving them as much notice as possible, and being flexible. We know there are lots of things that can happen in the run up to an event and we're here to support you as much as we can.

You can enter both Cosplay Chess and the Charity Cosplay Cafe if you wish. Please be aware in this case that you will have limited time between the end of chess and the start of the cafe to get ready.
